UBT History
In 1923 Anthony Swiatowy and George Schwind jointly founded United Heating and Plumbing Company in South Bend, Indiana. Their vision was to provide the local community with the latest technology available for industrial and public buildings. United was the mechanical contractor of choice for many local companies as they grew into major international corporations. These early customers included the Bendix Corporation, Studebaker Corporation, Miles Laboratories, and Oliver Plow Works.
United became known regionally as a high quality provider of HVAC, steam generation, and piping systems and services. In 1949, Erv Swift, son of founder Tony Swiatowy joined the firm. Erv was fresh from his service to our nation as a decorated combat soldier in the Pacific Theatre during World War II and had recently graduate from Purdue University. In 1965, Erv purchased the company and became president. Over the next 35 years, United continued to flourish as more prestigious customers and projects were added. University of Notre Dame, Indianapolis Airport, and Tippecanoe Place are some of the most notable. In 2001, Erv semi-retired and sold the company to the third generation of family ownership
United is no longer involved in the mechanical contracting business. Rather, we now specialize in a total building technology that includes building automation and controls, access systems, HVAC equipment, and energy monitoring. United is a union shop. We have bee signatory to the United Association of Plumbers and Pipe fitters since 1923.
